Must I submit to you?

Submit I must
Because he keeps on insisting on how I must submit if I want the relationship to work out
Ah ah ah! Indeed I must submit because society dictates so
Masculinity has to prevail over femininity!
Our society is the breaker of every happy life
If we don’t abide by it, happiness will go
But again what’s the essence here

Are you marrying tradition or me?
Does society keep your bed warm?
Does it take care of you when you are unwell?
Does it cook for you?
Does it stroke your temple and look into your eyes with burning love?
If it does, my friend go get society and let me be

If this is our life, you don’t expect me to strip down to become you
I can do it half way, you know, for us!
How about we meet in the middle?
How about you hear me out?
How about you stop this obsession of submission?
Must it prevail over the beautiful things we have?

You call me strong-headed
Proud, arrogant huuuuuh!
You remind me every single day how pride blocks the way for me
Has speaking up become pride?
Has pointing out what I like and don’t become arrogant?
Really really really!

When I met you
Do you remember that day?
Well I do for it is etched in my very being
The tender taps
The sweet Whispers
Your eyes betrayed you sweetheart
I wasn’t what you desired but something happened
Your eyes didn’t coordinate with your brain’s desires

I never for a single day coiled my tail
I was as plain and bare as the sub-Saharan desert
I wanted you to see through me
Decide whether what you saw is what you would still take
We trudged on
Here we are today and society reminds you about submission
How about you define for me this submission thing?
Perhaps my weak mind can grasp it
How does it boost happiness?
How does it make us better?

If speaking out my mind
Being the real me
You know the me with the long tail
If this is what you call otherwise to this submission of your people
I am happy to stay this way

For when you change me
I will break from the sadness and energy of trying to be something else
We can co-exist as us

I apologise for being selfish
Is what you are doing and living actually an act?
Could it be draining you?
Could it be that you are doing this because you think this is how to love?
I believe love and how we love should not be dictated by society
Let’s build what we both want and what makes us, us

Through the eyes of AYENYO Joanita
