Cut off her hair
For some reason a child having hair, especially a full head of hair is a problem around here.
A lady commented on a girl's hair today. "Cut off her hair, it's too long for her". Many mothers have been nagged to a point of cutting off their children's beautiful hair.
I recall Queen's hair being long enough to hold it into a bun at 6mos old and these "wise" females who would always visit and complain on the length. I ignored many, explained to some and had to get my Africanness at play. My response these days is permanent on "give birth to a girl and chop off her hair"
Hair is so beautiful especially when maintained!
Let's look at dressing, in my tradition, we are to dress up in long clothes, pants on women is kind of a problem. There is one particular woman who nagged me as a child and transferred it to Queen in recent times. She would always scold, and try to shame me for wearing short clothes at 6 yrs old. I remember vividly, yes I do and I hated her for that. She was nice with mom around, which made me hate her even more. Short to her is from knee up. She started her manyanga on Queen and I am glad I was there to put her in her place. We are sane not to dress our children in "provocative" clothes. An 8 yr looks sweet in that short swirly flowery dress. It's just part of childhood. It doesn't have to be boring as many dress children in adult looking clothes.
Back to hair, if you are within my backyard, then definitely you have heard of how long hair destructs studies. I have failed to understand this concept even in my adulthood. All explanations are not solid.
Mother of daughter, feed your daughter's hair and with the rich texture, you have so many styling options.
Hair is beautiful, short clothes are beautiful!
