With you, It’s You

I hold my breath as the moonlight sweeps through your stature at midnight
It is a sight to behold!
Yes! At midnight when you wake up to go get me some water from the well
I need to clean up the next day and run chores
See, we are in this same universe, but the climate change has hit us real bad
Our wells are drying up and when the rains take long to return
Like now, he cannot watch me stay with unquenched thirst, with my body pale from dirt
We cannot predict any more when the first rains fall
Nor the last rains sinking into the soil

They call him weak
They call him soft
Why?
He helps me with house chores
He bathes the children
He sings for me
Surprises me with full kisses on the lips!
Massages my body when It becomes a wreck!
He sweeps me off my feet as I do the dishes
Like a baby I cling on him as he sways me around
Singing sweet melodies meant for me
The kind you will never hear

What has society done?
What right has society to dictate how lovers can lead a happy life?
What right has society got to dictate who does what in a household?
If he cannot chop down a tree,
He wasn’t moulded for that
If he wants to carry me on his laps all day and night, let him
That is our way

Why must a man choke in pain, frustration?
Why, why, why?
When tears well in his eyes
We call him weak
When he wails
We call him a woman
When he openly talks about his challenges
We call him unmanly
For how long will this continue?
Society, relieve our sons
Let them enjoy life

Ever noticed the lifestyle of the shooters?
Their marriages have failed!
You find them seated under the tamarind tree in a somber mood
Somber enough to make you stop in your tracks
Did they just lose a child this morning?
Nooooo! This is what they call ideal love!!
They look like total strangers afraid to look at one another
Waiting to jump at each other should there be some sudden movement
The home is heavy and thick with sadness!
They tear at each other’s throat
They yell like they live worlds apart
The children find every excuse to stay out of home

Let us be
Let us nurture this love
Nobody stops constructive advice
What we don’t want is meddling and pushing us apart; only to become a second you

My partner holds my hands
I feel well protected by him
Society, you have done enough in this arena
Let us love our way,
Let our sons be humans,
Let them share their feelings openly
May love reign!
